Join us for a special 35mm screening of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, followed by a Q&A with award-winning costume designer Debra McGuire in celebration of her new book, Dressing the Story: The Art of Costume Design. Moderated by producer Jim Stark.
McGuire is the costume designer behind Ron Burgundy’s unmistakable 1970s look, a defining costume signature that helped make him one of the most instantly recognizable comic characters of the 2000s. Across a career spanning almost 50 years, she has dressed stories for film, television, and theater, shaping how audiences understand character through fabric, texture, and silhouette. Her work includes all ten seasons of Friends, The Morning Show, Freaks & Geeks, New Girl, Game Night, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Super Troopers 2, among others.
“Film is a visual language, and costume design is one of its most potent dialects. Costumes are not mere clothing but carefully considered elements of storytelling, communicating who a character is before they ever speak a line,” writes McGuire in Dressing the Story. Told through conversations with independent producer Jim Stark, the book reflects on the lessons learned, challenges met, and joys found in designing for some of the most iconic productions of our time, while illuminating the often-invisible artistry, collaboration, and craft that costume design brings to the screen.
